Game of Basketball
Basketball is one of the most popular sports around the globe. It involves two teams that score points to shoot a ball through a horizontally placed basket. Basketball is essentially an indoor sport which is played on a rectangular floor that could be made out of polished wood or maple. But, it is often played outdoors on concrete surfaces as well.
The credits for the inception of this game go to Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian American physical training coach who taught at YMCA, Massachusetts, USA. He created basic rules around this sport of basketball with a motive of engaging his students during the long winters. He used actual peach baskets and a soccer ball. With time, the game evolved and standards came to be defined for the ball, the baskets and the basketball court as well.
The initial development and spread of the basketball game would be credited to YMCA, but they later discouraged the sport. It is then that a lot of colleges and sports clubs began to get interested in basketball. In 1898, the National Basketball League was formed that controlled the rules of the game, though it lasted for just around 5 years.
Through the early decades of 20th century, the game of basketball generated a lot of interest in the college and school level players, and then started to be played as professional game. The Basketball Association of America (BAA) came into being in 1946 and later merged with the National Basketball League in 1949 and was named National Basketball Association (NBA). NBA now dominates the game and is the top professional basketball league in the world today.
In the year 1932, Eight countries came together to form the International Basketball Federation, popularly called FIBA. FIBA organized several world championships. In 1992, basketball was played in Olympics for the first time in Berlin. FIBA now is the world governing body for this sport of basketball with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and has 213 national federations of basketball under it.
